Anthony Richardson got off to a strong start Sunday with two rushing touchdowns, but his day came to an early end.

The Indianapolis Colts rookie quarterback was ruled out of his team's 31-20 win against the Houston Texans after sustaining a concussion, the team said.

Colts coach Shane Steichen said Richardson self-reported concussion symptoms, and the team believes the quarterback was hurt on his second touchdown play.

The No. 4 pick of April's NFL draft took a shot from Texans safety M.J. Stewart Jr. as he scored, with his head whipping against the turf in the end zone. Richardson, however, played for the Colts' two ensuing drives – both three-and-outs – before being removed from the game.

“It looked like a fluke thing on that one, but hopefully it doesn’t continue to happen,” Steichen said after the game.

Richardson, who finished with 56 passing yards as well as 36 rushing yards, was replaced by Gardner Minshew in the second quarter. The veteran signal-caller stepped in to complete 19 of 23 passes for 171 yards and a touchdown in Indianapolis' first win of the season.

“I told him at halftime, ‘I’m going to hold it down for you,’” Minshew said after the game of a conversation with Richardson. “Everybody follows him, he’s the leader of our team, and I was happy to be able to fill in and help when I could, but I’m going to continue to help him and support him as much as I can.”

Richardson threw for a score and ran for another last week in his debut, a 31-21 Colts loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Indianapolis next plays at the Baltimore Ravens next Sunday.
