8-year-old girl fatally hit by school bus in Kansas: police
A little girl heading to school was fatally hit by a school bus in Kansas Wednesday morning, police said.
The incident happened in southeast Wichita, Kansas just west of 47th Street South and Kansas Highway 15.
An 8-year-old girl who has not yet been identified was waiting for a school bus with her brother. The two were on their way to Derby Elementary around 7:20 am.
Police said the young girl walked into the street between two cars as a Derby school bus was coming down the block and it ran her over.
Medics arrived shortly after and tried to save the girl, but she died at the scene.
“We are heartbroken by the loss of one of our students," Derby Public Schools Superintendent Heather Bohaty released in a statement. "Students and staff will be supported by additional social workers from schools across our district. Due to the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the district cannot release the identity of the student, however, we ask that each of you please keep this student and their loved ones in your thoughts during this unimaginable time.”
Captain Benjamin Blick of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said the two siblings had been waiting for a different bus than the one that hit the girl, KSN reported.
"It’s a very tragic incident down here. She was a student, and she was out there today with a brother who was also supposed to be picked up by a bus,” Captain Benjamin Blick, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, said. “It’s just a bad situation.”
Police will identify the girl Thursday morning.
